## Math Department Mission Statement

The Patriot High School Mathematics department will establish a culture in which students develop a lasting and comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts. Our students will be able to apply various problem-solving strategies to a wide array of mathematical concepts and also apply their skills across the curriculum. We will provide an environment where students feel that their classes are safe, productive, and are able to conform to their specific learning styles.

## Resources

### Math Honor Society and Tutoring

Love math and/or solving math problems? Consider joining Patriot's National Math Honor Society. For returning and interested new students the first meeting is Tuesday September 22 in room 2031. Information on membership criteria and nomination forms are on the NMHS page.

The Math Honor Society offers peer tutoring to Patriot Students. Please check back for information on signing up for tutoring or contact Mr. Keskel.

### Summer Math

Students taking upper level math courses should check the summer assignments in the "For Parents & Students" menu. Any student not doing that, or students looking for more, should check out this link:

### Online Resources

SOL practice items provide students an opportunity to become familiar with new types of items that reflect the increased rigor and new content found in the 2009 Mathematics SOL. These practice items contain technology-enhanced items (TEI) that require students to demonstrate their learning in ways other than a multiple choice format.

Prince William County teachers are expected to use the practice item guide with students, as it will help ensure that students are familiar with the types of items that they may encounter while taking the mathematics test. The directions in the guide will also lead students through practice with the online tools, and will familiarize them with how to navigate through the tests, and how to use the Section Review screen within TestNav™.

Please note that the practice items are not intended to be a complete test and are not intended to cover all content for the grade level or course. Furthermore, while the practice items provide examples of some TEI, they are not intended to represent all types of functionality associated with these item types.

The TestNav Tools Practice sets will provide students opportunities to practice using the online tools such as the ruler, straightedge, protractor, and compass. Not all tools included in this application are used for all grades 3-8.

These new SOL tests may consist of approximately 10 to 15 percent technology-enhanced items. These items are not multiple choice.

Enhanced Scope and Sequence (ESS) Sample Lesson Plans

Mathematics ESS Sample Lesson Plans help teachers align instruction with the 2009 Mathematics SOL by providing examples of how the knowledge and skills found in the SOL and Curriculum Framework can be presented to students in the classroom. The lesson plans are accessible using a keyword search, or by selecting specific SOL objectives organized by grade level and reporting category.

**Math Honor Society Peer Tutoring**

The Math Honor Society offers peer tutoring to Patriot Students. Students may receive help on their math assignments Monday through Thursday after school in room 2031. Walk in help (no appointment necessary) is available Monday through Thursday, 2:15-3:15.

Questions or concerns: please contact Mr Keskel in room 2031.

**Virtual/Peer Tutoring in FLEX**

Selected Algebra I students will participate in a computer-based Alg I remediation program and/or peer tutoring with Alg II students during their math flex period. Students will be identified for this program and students will be provided a pass during flex period to report to the computer lab. If a student is interested in participating in the program, please reach out to their teacher for a pass!

## Math Dept Office Hours

Office hours (extra help time) for each math teacher at Patriot are posted in the Files section below. Please consult this document and/or the syllabus provided by your student's math teacher for their availability. Your child may seek help with any Patriot math teacher, as well as their teacher (especially teachers of the same content), if the teacher's posted hours do not work for your child.

## Calculators

Some questions have come up about the use of calculators. The state of Virginia allows certain graphing calculators to be used on SOL tests. We are asking Patriot students to procure a calculator of their own for use during the school year so that they will have time to learn how to effectively use the calculator. Below are the calculators approved by the state:

- CASIO 9750 G Series
- CASIO 9850 G Series
- CASIO 9860 G Series
- CASIO PRIZM fx-CG10
- TI-82
- TI-83 Series
- TI-84 Series
- TI-Nspire in TI-84 Plus mode
- TI-Nspire (non-CAS)
- TI-Nspire CX (non-CAS)
- TI-73 Explorer
